NASA collected data and records of the last 30 years and through a special team of scientists of various specialties, came to conclusions
Report of an independent panel of experts NASA about the phenomena of unknown origin comes to the public today and calls for the collection of more and more reliable data to study these phenomena.
NASA defines as “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena” (UAP), ie ‘Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena’, the events observed in the sky, which cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena from a scientific point of view. These are the well-known UFOs, however, as the term had a negative connotation, it has been officially replaced by the term UAP.
The report was prepared by the independent panel of experts, chaired by astrophysicist David Spergel. This is an advisory group of 16 scientists from various fields, appointed in June 2022 with the aim of examining UAPs from a scientific point of view and advancing the understanding of the phenomena.
THE study group used unclassified data from government agencies, commercial data and data from other sources to advance recommendations in the report. It is noted in the report that there are currently a limited number of high-quality observations of UAPs, which makes it currently impossible to draw safe scientific conclusions about their nature.
Watch video from the presentation:
“At this stage there is no reason to conclude that the existing reports of UAPs are of extraterrestrial origin. However, if we recognize this as a possibility, then these objects must have traveled through our solar system to get here,” the committee explains in the report.
Moreover, in a related press conference after the publication of the report, the commander of NASA, Bill Nelson, emphasized that “as we understand that we are in a world of discovery, we have taken specific actions to investigate UAPs.” He even said characteristically that “we are shifting the conversation from sensationalism to science” pledging that all information collected on UAPs will be transparently given to the world. He also announced the appointment of a director at NASA who will coordinate research around UAPs.
The experts find in the report that analysis of data on UAPs is hampered by a lack of multiple metrics and baseline data. A barrier to collecting data on UAP phenomena is “negative perceptions surrounding the reporting of UAPs,” and the scientists emphasize the vital role of NASA’s involvement “in reducing the stigma.”
They also call for NASA’s expertise to be leveraged “as part of a robust and systematic data acquisition strategy within a whole-of-government framework,” and add that artificial intelligence and machine learning are necessary tools to identify rare incidents, potentially involving UAPs, within huge data sets.
The study recommends that NASA use its open source resources, extensive technological expertise, data analysis techniques, commercial and federal partnerships to create a better and more robust data set for understanding future phenomena.
In addition, the report also makes special mention of public participation as a “critical aspect of understanding UAPs”, through increasing data collection efforts using modern crowdsourcing techniques, from citizen-observers around the world.
