One of the sons of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, 66, who is serving a life sentence in a maximum-security US prison, was extradited to the US on Friday, US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced.

Thanks to the “cooperation of US and Mexican law enforcement agencies, Ovidio Guzmán López, leader of the Sinaloa cartel, has been extradited to the US,” Mr. Garland said, according to a press release released by his agencies.

Earlier, two Reuters news agency sources with knowledge of the case said Ovid Guzman had been extradited to the United States, where he is wanted for drug trafficking.

Mexican newspaper Milenio, for its part, reported in its digital edition that authorities released the 33-year-old from prison to proceed with his extradition.

The Mexican attorney general’s office limited itself to stating that it had no comment.

Ovidio Guzmán López was arrested in an operation by the military and local law enforcement agencies in January in Sinaloa. The arrest sparked clashes that left at least 30 people dead – 19 thugs, 10 soldiers and a police officer – according to press reports.

Washington submitted an extradition request to Mexico in February.
