Thousands of women protested against sexual violence in downtown Montevideo on Friday, denouncing the “rape culture” prevailing in Uruguay following the gang rape of a 30-year-old woman.
With the slogans “No, it means no”, “It is not audacity, it is rape”, the demonstrations were organized by feminist collectives across the country, with a long march in the capital. The mobilizations took place after many incidents of sexual assault that were revealed in the last few days.
Early Sunday morning, a woman said she had been raped by a group of men in an apartment in Montevideo, where she had gone with one of the men she met at a nightclub and had consensual sex with. At least three other men later arrived at the apartment and raped her with the complicity of the man she had met.
The rape was confirmed by a medical examiner. DNA tests were ordered to confirm the responsibility of the alleged perpetrators, who were summoned to court.
“The culture of rape is to continue to say that men have ‘needs’ or + ‘sexual impulses’ that they can not control,” feminist collectives said in a lengthy statement.
“Every day we are confronted with phraseologies that indicate fear, silence and hesitation,” the text adds, with collectives calling for better sex education and tangible action by the State to protect women.
