Torrential rains, considered the heaviest in a century, caused flooding in northern Iran, injuring 20 people and causing property damage, local media reported today.

The rains, which are a frequent phenomenon in the northern part of the country, began on Sunday, mainly affecting the city of Astara, in Guilan province, on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

“In Astara, 271 millimeters of water fell, an amount that has been recorded for almost a century,” provincial crisis manager Amir Moradi said, according to the local Isna news agency.

At least one bridge was destroyed in Astara while rescue crews have been mobilized to help those affected.

In 2022, floods killed at least 96 people in 21 of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to figures cited by the media.
