Emergency officials in Orange County, New York, said on Facebook that they were dealing with a “bus rollover”
A bus carrying members of a school band overturned and crashed on a highway in New York state today, killing at least one person and injuring several others.
The dead man was an adult, according to the NBC affiliate in New York, citing a well-informed source who was not named.
Few official figures were immediately available. The crash occurred along Interstate 84 near the town of Wawayanda, about 75 miles (120 km) northwest of New York City, near the New Jersey border. New York State Police said in a social media post that the highway was closed at that point.
The bus was carrying members of a middle school band from Farmingdale, New York, in Nassau County, on a trip to a camp in Greeley, Pennsylvania, according to a Farmingdale School District statement released to local media.
“Police and emergency services (are) at the scene, as are local authorities,” the statement said.
At least 46 people were injured, five of them in critical condition, and most of the victims were minors, the NBC affiliate reported.
“I am aware of the tragedy in Orange County where a bus full of students was involved in an accident, resulting in injuries and one death,” New York Gov. Kathy Hotchul said in a statement.
Emergency services in Orange County, New York, said they were dealing with a “bus rollover” that they described as a multi-fatality incident, without providing further details. Images from the crash site show the bus had a logo of Regency Buses, a regional bus line serving New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The company did not respond to a request for comment.
