Ottawa will provide an additional C$650 million (€452 million) in military aid to Ukraine over the next three years, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in parliament in Ottawa today on the occasion of a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
This assistance will include the delivery of approximately 50 armored vehicles to Kiev and the training of Ukrainian pilots in F-16 fighter jets.
Zelensky asked Canada to stand by Ukraine “until victory.” “Thank you for your help,” the Ukrainian president said to the Canadian people. “You have been with us since the first days of this invasion (…) I hope you will stay by our side until our victory,” he added.
Zelensky will deliver a speech in the Canadian parliament, something he did not do in the US Congress, where he was yesterday. He will then travel with Trudeau to Toronto, where he will meet with businessmen and members of the Canadian-Ukrainian community. Canada is home to the second largest Ukrainian community in the world, after that of Russia, estimated at 1.4 million people.
