Heavy snowstorm hits northeastern US – 70 cm of snow has reached some cities

by

The blizzard that has been hitting the northeastern United States for the past two days has buried the area under a dense layer of snow, while wind gusts in places reach up to 120 kilometers per hour.

By late Saturday night, local time, Boston was covered in 60-centimeter snow, equaling the 2003 “record.” shows polar temperatures.

This snowstorm is called a “cyclone bomb” by the National Weather Service (NWS), a phenomenon characterized by a rapid and abrupt drop in atmospheric pressure. NWS recorded gusts of 80-120 km / h and predicted that the temperature would drop significantly at night.

More than 95,000 households have been left without electricity and snow continues to fall. In some cities, an “absolute record” is set, with the height of the snow reaching 70 cm.

On Saturday night, the local authorities again asked the residents to avoid, at least until noon on Sunday, the unnecessary movements. The whole area is preparing for a second night of the “white veil”, when it is impossible to distinguish where the snow ends on the ground and where the white clouds begin in the sky.

In New York, snowplows and salt shakers move at snail speed to slowly clear the streets. Central Park was covered by a 20 cm layer of snow. Many railway lines were shut down.

In the snow-covered Times Square, the illuminated neon signs are barely visible among the dense flakes. Few passers-by, however, were surprised to see the famous “naked cowboy”, Robert Burke, an artist who plays his guitar and sings under any conditions on the street. As usual, defying the cold this time, Burke wore only his underpants, his hat and his cowboy boots.

In Brooklyn, in the Campbell Hill area, sidewalks were covered with 30 inches of snow and many shops were closed.

The New York subway operates almost normally and serves, as in any bad weather, as a shelter for the thousands of homeless people in the city.

In the north, on Long Island, at the epicenter of the snowstorm, the snow reaches 60 cm. New York Governor Kathy Hawkol warned that the situation was “serious” and “possibly fatal”. So far a woman has been found dead, possibly from the cold, in her car.

“The most dangerous phase of the storm is now,” the governor said, urging residents once again to “avoid commuting by all means” until the roads open.

In Boston, 900 snowplows have mobilized and are slowly opening the roads. About 3,500 flights were canceled on Saturday and another 1,200 are expected to be canceled today, Sunday.

The cold wave is hitting the entire east coast. In Florida, authorities have issued a warning for frost and “iguana falls”, meaning that iguanas will freeze and fall from their trees – and some of them weigh up to 9 kilograms.
