Member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.

The resolution adopted Thursday afternoon at the annual IAEA General Conference in Vienna calls for “the immediate withdrawal of all military and other unauthorized personnel from the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, as well as the return of the plant to the full control of the competent Ukrainian principles”.

It also demands that IAEA inspectors permanently stationed at the nuclear power plant be allowed unfettered access to all areas of the plant. Currently, IAEA inspectors do not have access to several reactor roofs.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi recently expressed concern over poor technical maintenance and the presence of Russian troops at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. He has also repeatedly warned of the risk of a serious accident due to the hostilities near the nuclear reactor complex.

Russian troops seized the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in early March 2022, a few days after the invasion of Ukraine began. The nuclear plant’s reactors remain shut down as of September 2022.

The resolution of the International Atomic Energy Agency was upvoted by 69 member states. It was voted against by six countries, including Russia, China and Iran. 32 countries chose to abstain, including Pakistan and South Africa.
