Syria: 373 killed in Guyana prison attack, jihadist-Kurdish fighting

by

Islamic State (IS) jihadist attack on a prison in northeastern Syria and fighting between them and Kurdish forces have left 373 dead, according to a new report released Sunday night by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

This NGO, with a large network of sources in Syria, had given a previous report with 332 dead in the battles between Kurds and jihadists that broke out after the January 20 attack on the Guyran prison in the province of Hasaka. A recent Observatory report puts the death toll at 373, of whom 268 are jihadists, 98 members of the Kurdish forces and seven civilians.

The increase is due to the discovery of new bodies – Kurds as well as jihadists – during search operations in prison buildings and nearby neighborhoods, according to the Observatory.

“The report is provisional because there are dozens of mutilated corpses that could not be identified,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Observatory.

The NGO estimates that the death toll is likely to rise further as many Kurdish fighters were seriously injured during the fighting.
