Scenes reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic Hollywood film have taken place in recent hours in New York, where severe storms have battered the county since this morning, turning local roads into rivers as rain poured down during rush hour traffic, stranding motorists.
Footage that went around the world showed cars trying to drive through particularly high levels of accumulated water that took the form of a vortex in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Cellphone video captured scenes of panic on a city bus at 18th Avenue and 60th Street in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn as rushing water flooded the vehicle, which was full of passengers, including children.
The vast roads of the “big apple” did not fare much better, of course, as the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the Belt Parkway and the Prospect Park Expressway turned into rivers filled with partially flooded cars that had been abandoned – stuck in torrents of drifting materials and debris.
The Metropolitan Transport Authority has urged commuters to stay at home if possible.
Almost every metro service was suspended, at least partially or rerouted or running with long delays.
Indicatively, two of the three lines of the Metro-North Railroad were not operating.
New York Governor Kathy Hotchul has declared a state of emergency for New York, the Hudson Valley and Long Island.
“This is a dangerous, life-threatening storm,” Hochul said in an interview with TV station NY1.
“Stick to it for the next 20 hours,” he added.
At the same time, Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency for the city’s five boroughs and urged New Yorkers to stay at home or seek shelter in safe buildings.
“This is a dangerous situation and it’s not over,” he said.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning, citing a “hazardous and life-threatening situation” caused by the storm.
“Do not attempt to travel unless you are moving in an organized manner from a flood-prone area or have been ordered to evacuate,” an emergency warning message sent earlier in the morning said.
A flash flood warning is in effect until 6 a.m. on Saturday for the entire state, with showers.
