Erdogan: “Terrorists will never achieve their goals” – Turkey no longer expects anything from the EU
The Kurdish PKK organization claimed responsibility for the bombing that occurred this morning in Ankara, resulting in the death of two of the attackers and the wounding of two police officers, according to Turkish media reports.
“An act of sacrifice was committed against the Turkish interior ministry by a group linked to our Immortal Brigade,” the armed group told the Kurdish-affiliated ANF media.
Earlier, Mr Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with a speech to the Turkish Parliament, warned “terrorists” and the European Union that it is making Turkey “endure 40 years”, hours after the suicide attack, for which there is no claim of responsibility, which resulted in the injuries of two policemen, in the center of the capital, Ankara.
“Turkey no longer expects anything from the European Union that makes us endure at its door for 40 years,” the head of state said at the start of the new parliamentary term.
Instead, she made no mention of her integration process Sweden in NATOwhich MPs are supposed to ratify during this parliamentary term.
“We have kept all the promises we have made to the EU, but they have kept almost none of theirs,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan, adding that he would not “tolerate new demands or conditions in the accession process” Turkey.
“If they intend to end the accession process that exists only on paper, that is their decision,” he said.
The president’s anger stems from a recent decision of his European Court of Human Rights which criticized Turkey this week for convicting a man of terrorism on the sole basis that he used the encrypted messaging app ByLock.
Erdogan was speaking a few hours after the suicide attack in front of the Ministry of Interiorin which the two attackers were killed.
“The criminals who threaten the peace and security of citizens have not achieved their goals and will never achieve them,” he said.
