“I want to say to our allies, to the American people and to the people of Ukraine, you can count on our support. We will not leave Ukraine,” the American president said today
US President Joe Biden vowed today that the US will not abandon war-torn Ukraine, calling on Republicans to stop “playing games” with the threat of federal budget paralysis, a day after Congress approved an interim deal .
The Senate last night approved an emergency measure that would allow the federal government to continue to be funded temporarily, just three hours before the shutdown, the suspension of various public services, began. However, the measure passed did not include a new aid package for Ukraine.
“I want to say to our allies, to the American people and to the people of Ukraine, you can count on our support. We will not leave Ukraine,” the American president said today in his televised speech.
He criticized Republicans for blocking talks on government spending, saying: “Enough is enough. (…) I got tired of micropolitics”.
At the same time, he emphasized that the Democrats have reached an agreement with the Republicans to continue supporting Ukraine.
Asked at a news conference if he could trust Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on future deals, Biden replied: “We just got a deal on Ukraine, so we’ll find out.”
The nature of this agreement was not specified. Biden also criticized Republicans.
