Prigozhin’s 25-year-old son is reportedly seeking to take control of WagnerPavel Prigozhin, Yevgeny Prigozhin, according to the American thinktank ISW.
In particular, Pavel Prigozhin is reportedly negotiating with Russia’s national guard, the Roshvardiya, to rejoin Wagner in the war in Ukraine, the Institute for the Study of War said, citing information from a Telegram channel linked to the group.
This move will provide an “alternative” solution in terms of leadership of Wagner to its commander Andrei Troshev, who is registered with the Ministry of Defense and has the support of Vladimir Putin.
A percentage of Wagner fighters prefer to rally around an alternative solution linked to Prigozhin rather than the Kremlin and Troshev which is aligned with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” ISW said.
The Rosguard falls directly under the presidential administration, which makes Putin’s “public endorsement of Troshev and Wagner’s subordination to the Russian Foreign Ministry notable,” analysts said.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would have to provide the equipment and supplies for the reconstitution of a large force under the Roseguard in any case, since Rosgvardia does not have the logistical infrastructure to do it on its own.”
However, according to an ISW source close to Wagner, negotiations between Pavel Prigozhin and the national guard include retaining the paramilitary group’s name, symbols, ideology, commanders and command.
