It reminds me of Casa de Papel, but it’s real! A statue… guards untold treasure.

H Plaza de Cibeles (Kyveli Square) in Madrid consists of a complex of splendid neoclassical buildings and statues. It takes its name from eponymous statue of Cybele with the beautiful fountain, while across from it is the Bank of Spain, as well as other palaces, such as the Palacio de Buenavista, the Palacio de Linares and the Palacio de Cibeles.

But the real “relationship” between the statue of Cybele and the Bank of Spain hidden deep inside the imposing building, and it is invisible: it is a vault located 38 meters below the ground. Called the “Chamber of Gold”, it contains most of Spain’s gold reserves, gold bars and also old coins, such as an old coin from the 12th century.

Many safety measures protect the chamber, such as a 16-ton door. but the most surprising and original is the security measure associated with La Cibeles, which… guards the untold treasure of Spanish gold reserves. In the event of an alarm, the steel doors will automatically close, the corridors will be sealed, and the entire area will be flooded with the same water that powers the statue of Cybele!
