A formal vote to approve the resolution will take place in the European Parliament in October
Carry-on fees may soon be a thing of the pastn, as the EU tries to simplify ticket pricing for air travel.
The European Parliament’s Petitions Committee unanimously approved a resolution calling on airlines to commit to allowing passengers to carry hand luggage for free.
It urges countries to enforce the decision issued by the European Court of Justice in 2014 on hand luggage according to which airlines cannot impose an additional fee on hand luggage, as long as they have reasonable weight and dimensions and comply with safety requirements.
The court essentially ruled that passengers should not have to pay extra, but the ruling was never implemented.
A formal vote to approve the resolution will take place in the European Parliament in October.
What does the ban on carry-on fees mean for passengers?
The EU is seeking to solve two problems: the different policies followed by airlines which result in confusion for passengers. In addition, the unclear ads that could mean hidden baggage charges etcwhen purchasing the ticket.
The new resolution will enforce the European Court of Justice’s decision to waive additional charges on hand luggage. It also seeks clarity from the airlines about the exact weight and size.
Weight and size standards can vary greatly between airlines. This is particularly problematic for passengers with connecting flights on different airlines that have different standards, increasing the likelihood of paying additional fees at the boarding gate.
