Over 1 million bullets seized from Iran, the United States sent to Ukraine on Monday, while Western aid to the country appears to be “drying up”.
The US military’s Central Command (Centcom), which oversees operations in the Middle East, said the bullets were seized from a ship bound for Yemen in December.
Ukraine’s Western allies recently warned that their production lines they struggle to keep up at the rate at which Ukraine uses ammunition.
Centcom announced that the Iranian bullets were transferred to Ukraine on Monday. The ammunition was initially seized by US naval forces from an unflagged ship named MARWAN 1 on December 9, it said.
The US government took possession of them in July through a process by which an asset can be seized if its owner is deemed to have is involved in criminal activity.
In this case, the claim was made against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch of Iran’s armed forces tasked with maintaining the country’s government.
In a statement, Centcom said the U.S. is “committed to working with our allies and partners to counter the flow of lethal Iranian aid to the region by any lawful means.”
Tehran has also been repeatedly accused of supplying Moscow with weapons, mainly drones, for use in the war in Ukraine.
The transfer of the Iranian munitions comes as the Biden administration looks for alternative ways to provide aid to Ukraine amid intensifying opposition from Republicans in Congress.
Officials have been warning for weeks that the money currently available in Ukraine are almost sold outbut pressure from members of the Republican right has so far prevented the House of Representatives from approving additional funds.
On Tuesday, the Republican right succeeded in ousting the speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy, a move that will delay any vote on further aid to Ukraine until a replacement is installed, which won’t happen until at least the middle of next week.
Any future president who brings a vote on the issue to the floor will almost certainly face similar opposition.
