The Brazilian government plans to mobilize at least six aircraft to repatriate its nationals who wish to flee Israel and the Palestinian Territories following the attack launched by Hamas on Israeli territory on Saturday morning and Israeli retaliation, the Air Force announced on Sunday. of the Latin American state.

“We have six aircraft ready” with a capacity of up to 230 passengers, Brazilian Air Force Chief Marcelo Damaseno told reporters after a meeting with foreign and defense ministers at the presidency in Brasilia.

The aim is to quickly remove “all Brazilians who are in the area and wish” to leave, he added. The first flights are expected to take place today and tomorrow, Tuesday.

Mr. Damaseno clarified that several Brazilian citizens already left on commercial flights.

The government estimates that there are approximately 14,000 Brazilians living in Israel, while another 6,000 live in the Palestinian Territories. “The great majority” of these people are affected by the hostilities, according to a statement from Brazilian diplomacy.

When contacted by AFP, the foreign ministry did not say whether it had been confirmed that Brazilians were among the victims or missing.

On Saturday, Brazil’s center-left President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took to social media to condemn the “terrorist attacks committed against civilians” in Israel.
