Over 800,000 asylum applications were registered in its member states The European Unionin Norway and Switzerland until October, according to EU Asylum Agency figures released today.

The number increased by leaps and bounds from the corresponding period in 2022 and it is the highest since 2016, according to today’s paper Die Welt, which has data from the OEA.

In 29 states, 801,459 asylum applications were submitted from January 1 to October 3.

The most spectacular increases were recorded by Latvia (+168%) and Estonia (+119%), which is attributed to the increase in migration flows through Belarus.

Germany recorded the third largest increase (+74%) compared to the same period last year.

On the other hand, the biggest decreases were recorded in Denmark (–56%), Malta (–54%), Cyprus (–52%) and Austria (–41%).

By far the country with the fewest asylum applications so far is Hungary (26).
