The US Coast Guard’s statement was accompanied by a photo showing the 22-foot vessel’s intact titanium stern cap.
Debris and possible human remains recovered from Titan submarine, the US Coast Guard announced, months after the boat exploded, killing five people.
The Coast Guard announced that during a rescue mission last week, evidence was recovered from the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean. The statement was accompanied by a photo showing the intact titanium stern cap of the 22-foot vessel.
The wreckage was taken to a US port for further analysiswhile evidence believed to be human remains “were carefully recovered from the wreckage of the Titan and transported to U.S. medical examiners for analysis,” the Coast Guard said.
On the morning of June 18, the submarine Titan dived into the wreck of the Titanic with five people on board. It was scheduled to return in the afternoon to a Canadian research vessel, the Polar Prince, which provided it with surface support about 900 nautical miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
About 1 hour and 45 minutes after Titan dived, the Polar Prince lost contact with him and notified the Coast Guard. From that moment an international search and rescue operation was launched.
On June 22, the Coast Guard announced that the Titan’s tail cone and other debris had been found on the ocean floor, about 1,600 feet from the Titanic’s bow. All five occupants were dead.
