Public Diplomacy Minister Galit Distel Atbaryan is resigning, protesting that her ministry was stripped during the Gaza war of the minimal powers it was given when it was formed earlier this year.

In a lengthy tweet, Distel Atbaryan reports that this week, the government authorized the Diaspora Ministry to direct Israel’s public diplomacy abroad alongside the work of the Foreign Ministry, making the ministry “a waste of public money.”

Many journalists and observers noted throughout this year that Distel Atbaryan’s ministry lacked real powers, with the ministry consisting solely of the minister’s office.

He tried and failed several times to appoint a director-general of the ministry, while his few products – online videos and posts in English that sought to convey the government’s position on issues such as judicial reform – were widely derided for their quality and delayed messaging.
