This is the first time that a Spanish prime minister has official talks with the Basque separatist party
The Spaniard Pedro Sanchez met with representatives of the Catalan party Junts in the context of talks on the formation of a government. Also, phe also had a meeting with EH Bildu, while this is the first time that a Spanish prime minister has official talks with the Basque separatist party.
“We are still a long way from a historic compromise,” Junts parliamentary spokeswoman Miriam Nogueras said after the meeting with Sanchez.
Junts demands an amnesty potentially involving more than 1,400 people involved in the Catalan independence drive that ended in 2017.
Sanchez said he was seeking a deal that would include not only a vote of confidence but also approval by the legislature to pass a budget.
“For the PSOE, the commitment to coexistence, dialogue and pluralism is the road map to securing a vote of confidence in Pedro Sánchez“, the Socialists said in a statement after the meeting.
Risking censure from his constituents angry over decades of violence in Spain by the now-defunct Basque armed group ETA, Sanchez also met with Bildu’s representative in Congress, Mertxe Aizpurua, and her Senate counterpart, Gorka Elejabarrieta.
