Look, if there are more difficulties at the regional level, we will immediately have huge difficulties on European soil because of the refugees, said the President of the European Council
European Council President Charles Michel warned on Friday that the Israel-Hamas war could create a wave of refugees to Europe, raising the risk of amplifying anti-immigrant voices, deepening division and stoking tensions between supporters of Israel and Palestinians.
“Look, if there are more difficulties at the regional level, we will immediately have huge difficulties on European soil because of the refugees,” EU Council President Michel said in an interview with The Associated Press.
“And we know how it can be used by some political groups within the EU to fuel some confrontations and make the EU more fragmented“, he said, adding that the war in Gaza could increase polarization on one of the most contentious issues in many European nations.
We know that in our societies across the EU, there are also different perceptions among our citizens, and this is very important if we are not to introduce the tragic conflict into the EU,” he said. “This is not the time to have more difficulties because we will introduce conflicts into the EU.”
