The European Commission announced this afternoon that it will triple humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke today with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Commission said.

“The Commission will immediately increase the current humanitarian aid budget earmarked for Gaza by €50 million,” von der Leyen said in a statement. “This will total over €75 million.”

The head of the Commission added: “We will continue our close cooperation with the UN and its agencies to ensure that this aid reaches those in need in the Gaza Strip.” The President of the Commission added that “the Commission supports the right of Israel to defend itself against the terrorists of Hamas, in full respect of international humanitarian law. We are working hard to ensure that support is provided to innocent civilians in Gaza in this context».
