Qatar mediates for Hamas to release women, children and elderly hostages after the attack it launched in southern Israel about a week ago, according to the Times of Israel.

Hamas, represented in the talks by its leader abroad Ismail Haniyeh, initially said in Qatar that was willing to return these hostages in exchange for Israel releasing 36 female and teenage Palestinian prisoners who are in Israeli prisons.

According to the publication, the proposal was not accepted by Israel, which is primarily focused on advancing its military campaign to eliminate Hamas. Despite Israel’s rejection, Qatar-brokered talks are continuing.

A source familiar with the negotiations told The Times of Israel that some in Hamas recognize that taking women, children and the elderly hostage has given Israel more international legitimacy to massively expand its military campaign against the Islamist group.
