What would happen if all museum visitors touched the exhibits?
The National Museum of Wales has revealed what can happen using a vase with two marble hands, reports mymodernmet.
The vase with the two marble hands
The museum houses the Jenkins vase. It is made from a round Roman altar found near Naples in 1489, turned into a vase sometime in the 18th century.
The vase is not surrounded by a protective rope because the museum hopes that patrons will keep their distance.
Below the staff have attached two marble hands — one protected and one free for visitors to touch.

The difference between the two is obvious. The second is much dirtier. The closed piece retains the pristine white color of the marble, while the other has taken on a shade of beige, with impurities in its folds.
Besides dirt, too much friction can irreparably damage the sculptures. For example, the bronze statue of St. Peter in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican has been worn by the thousands of visitors who touch it each year.
