The American House of Representatives, which yesterday got a new Republican president, after weeks of paralysis in the Capitol, adopted a resolution of support for Israel yesterday.

The text, which reaffirms US support for the Jewish state, which is “defending itself” in the “barbaric war waged by Hamas and other terrorists”, was approved by 412 votes to just 10 against. Nine out of ten nos came from Democrats. Six members voted absent.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote soon on legislation: Democratic President Joe Biden asked Congress last week to approve a $106 billion emergency funding package to continue US military support to Ukraine, Israel ( 14.3 billion) and to Taiwan, as well as to strengthen the security of the US southern border.

However, the fact that the new “speaker” is Mike Johnson may complicate things, as he, like several other allies of former President Donald Trump, has objected to the continuation of military aid to Kiev.

Mr Johnson said yesterday that he would be in favor of aid to Ukraine “conditionally”, adding that “we are working on it”, “we want accountability and clear goals from the White House”, however “we will have these discussions” and it will be ” very productive”.
