The funding will help leading researchers to jointly contribute their expertise and resources to expanding our knowledge
Funding of €395 million will be given by the European Research Council (ERC) to 37 research groups to tackle some of the world’s most intractable research problems in various scientific fields. The funding will help leading researchers to jointly contribute their expertise and resources to expanding our knowledge.
The teams awarded Synergy grants under the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program will study, among other things, ways to mitigate the risk of unpredictable volcanic disasters, whether bats hold the secret to health and longevity , and how the ways plants absorb water could help scientists develop crops resilient to climate change.
Mrs Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said: “Some scientific problems are too complex for researchers working alone. Challenges such as climate change or aging touch different research fields and their study requires the cooperation of different methods, skills and resources. That’s why the European Research Council has today awarded 37 “Synergy” grants that will enable small high-level research teams working in various scientific fields to solve difficult problems. I wish them success in this great endeavor.”
A total of 395 proposals were submitted as part of the announcement. 135 researchers from 19 countries in Europe and the world will participate in the selected projects.
