The Islamist Palestinian group Hamas, which controls Gaza, cannot release hostages it kidnapped during its attack on Israel until a ceasefire is agreed, a member of a Hamas delegation visiting Moscow said, according to Russian Kommersant newspaper.

According to the newspaper, Hamas member Abu Hamid claimed that Hamas needs time to track down all those abducted by Israel and taken to Gaza by various Palestinian factions during the October 7 attack by Hamas.

“They caught dozens of people, most of them civilians, and we need time to find them in the Gaza Strip and then release them,” Hamid said.

He added, according to Kommersant, that a calm environment is needed to realize this goal. Hamas claimed yesterday, Thursday, that around 50 of the hostages had been killed by Israeli airstrikes.

Israel has called on Russia to expel the Hamas delegation visiting Moscow, calling its invitation “deplorable”.
