White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Friday that US strikes on Iran-linked groups in Syria had targeted weapons and storage facilities, warning that the US will do whatever it takes in case of an Iranian response.

“These blows were necessary in self-defense,” Kirby told ABC.

The US Army carried out airstrikes at two facilities in eastern Syria in response in the ongoing attacks against US military personnel in Iraq and Syria last week, according to the US Department of Defense.

Two F-16 fighters targeted two facilities – an arms depot and an ammunition storage area – near Abu Kamal used by the Corps of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated groups, a senior US defense official told Fox News. It is unclear if there were any Iranian fighters at the facility when it was struck.

Asked if Iran would retaliate, Kirby clarified: “It’s not uncommon for them to fight back. If they do, we will do absolutely whatever is necessary to protect our troops and facilities.” “We’ll be ready for it,” he added.
