Four people were killed and at least ten others were wounded in sporadic clashes between armed groups on Sunday in Gharian, northwestern Libya, according to converging sources.
“Fighting broke out suddenly in the early hours of the morning (yesterday Sunday) between armed groups in the city, killing four people and injuring several others,” a source close to the security forces told AFP.
Clashes continued, albeit “sporadically”, in various areas, forcing the authorities to “block access to the city” to “protect the lives of passers-by and travelers”.
The tally was confirmed by an AFP source at the Garian hospital; he spoke of 4 dead and 10 wounded.
Videos, the authenticity of which has not been verified, were uploaded to social networking sites and broadcast by Libyan media: they show dozens of gunmen on the streets of Gharian and armored vehicles on fire.
Libya has been in chaos since 2011, when a NATO-backed uprising toppled the regime of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. In the oil-rich country since then, a myriad of armed organizations, which change sides frequently, and two rival governments, one in the west, the other in the east, have been fighting for power. The one in Tripoli (west) is recognized by the UN and is headed by Abdelhamid Dbayba, the other, in Kyrenia, is supported by Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
Prime Minister Dhabaiba’s government, which theoretically controls Gharian, has not reacted so far,
