Pope Francis made an important “opening” to transgender people and in favor of the rights of children of same-sex couples, approving a decision of the Vatican “ministry” responsible for the correctness of faith.

From now on, based on this decision, as the Italian newspaper La Repubblica writes, “transgender people will be able to be godparents at baptisms, best men at religious weddings, and they will be able to be baptized.” At the same time, it is stipulated that “the children of same-sex couples” who have been adopted or obtained through a surrogate mother can be baptized.

The Rome newspaper, citing a publication in the French newspaper La Croix, adds that these are instructions that will apply to the entire Roman Catholic Church and are contained in an answer to a question addressed by a Catholic bishop from Brazil.

In more detail, the Catholic Church, through the “ministry” for the correctness of the faith, underlines that “under certain conditions, transgender people can be accepted as godparents and in the event that they have undergone hormone therapy or surgery for sex reassignment” .

The Roman Catholic Church adds, however, that “this is not a right” and that “pastoral prudence dictates that it is not allowed in the event that there may be a risk of scandal, unfair legalization or disorientation with regard to the educational context of the church community”.
