Ukrainian: Macron meets with Putin and Zelensky to de-escalate crisis

In recent days, the French president has already had telephone contacts with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts, but also with US President Joe Biden in order to mediate the de-escalation of the Ukrainian crisis.

These two meetings will take place face to face, clarified the Elysee Palace, but “in coordination with the European partners”.
Macron and his advisers have also spoken by telephone with many of their European counterparts in recent days, the French presidency recalled.

Tensions remain high in recent hours after Washington said it had evidence – which it did not provide – that Moscow intended to videotape a fake Ukrainian attack on Russia in order to use it as a pretext to invade its neighbor.

Kiev appears more moderate, with Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov calling the risk of a “significant escalation” of the conflict “small” yesterday, Thursday, but overall 130,000 soldiers have been mobilized.

Yesterday, Thursday, Macron spoke by phone with Putin and Zelensky.

The presidents of France and Russia discussed “security guarantees” sought by Moscow in a third telephone conversation this week, the Kremlin said, referring to a “constructive dialogue”.

Macron and Putin last met in the summer of 2019, when the French president had invited him to the Fortress of Breganson, in the south of France. The French president was scheduled to travel to Moscow to meet with Putin in the spring of 2020, but the visit was postponed due to the health crisis.

The Russian president will meet on Friday with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in the Chinese capital, where the two leaders are expected to establish friendly relations at the personal and state level, amid escalating tensions with the United States, around travels to Beijing on the day of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, in the afternoon (local time) at the National Stadium of the Chinese capital, also known by the nickname “Bird’s Nest”.
