Erdogan was speaking at the joint Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
The president of Turkey Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that an international peace conference should be convened to find a permanent solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
Erdogan was speaking at the joint summit of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation being held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“Israel takes revenge… on Gaza’s babies, children and women”, said Erdogan, repeating his call for an immediate ceasefire, “What is urgent in Gaza is not a pause for a few hours, rather we need a permanent ceasefire.”
Turkey, which has sharply escalated criticism of Israel as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza intensifies, supports a two-state solution and hosts Hamas officials, which it does not consider a terrorist organization, unlike the United States, Britain and other countries in the West .
“We cannot put the Hamas resistance who defend their homeland in the same category as those of the occupying power,” Erdogan argued.
A permanent solution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians depends on the creation of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, the Turkish president said.
“We believe that an international peace conference will provide the most suitable basis for it. We are ready to make the necessary efforts, including those of a guarantor force, in order to preserve the peace that will be established in this context,” he said.
The statements of the Israeli minister Amichai Eligiachou on the idea of an Israeli nuclear strike on Gaza revealed that Israel has nuclear weapons, Erdogan said, calling for an international investigation.
“If there are nuclear bombs that were hidden from the International Atomic Energy Agency’s examination, they should also be revealed,” Erdogan said.
Israel does not publicly admit to having nuclear weapons, although the Federation of American Scientists estimates that Israel has about 90 nuclear warheads.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu banned Eliyahu from government meetings “until further notice” after his remarks.
