The “deterioration” of the situation is making mediation efforts difficult, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari warned at a news conference in Doha. “We believe that there will be no other opportunity for the two sides beyond this mediation,” he added, expressing hope that the situation will develop in such a way that “we will see a ray of hope” that will signal an exit from this “horrible crisis.”
On Monday, Hamas’ armed wing accused Israel of “dodging” talks on the release of dozens of hostages. In a recorded message, the spokesman for the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, Abu Obeida, said that Qatar was making efforts to free the (Israeli) hostages in exchange for the release of 200 children and 75 Palestinians held “in enemy prisons”. Israel “asked for the release of 100 (hostages), we informed the mediators that we could release them if a five-day truce was declared, meaning a ceasefire and aid to all people everywhere in the Gaza Strip – but the enemy is evading,” he added .
Al Ansari declined to comment on the details of the negotiations, but said his country remains hopeful of securing the release of other hostages.
