The United States today announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, worth an estimated $100 million, which includes means to strengthen air defenses, on the day of the visit of US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in Kyiv.

The package includes an additional HIMARS multiple launch system, artillery shells and anti-tank weapons, as well as small-caliber ammunition, according to announcements by Pentagon and the State Department.

This new aid comes from funds already approved by the US Congress but which are being reduced pending a vote on a new budget for the Ukraine called for by President Joe Biden, but remains pending because of opposition from Republican lawmakers.

“It is critical that Congress take steps to support Ukraine by approving the additional budget,” said the head of US diplomacy Anthony Blinkenaccording to the press release.

In the Ukrainian capital, the US Secretary of Defense assured President Volodymyr Zelensky that Washington will continue to support Kiev in its fight against the Russian invaders.

The United States is by far the largest donor of military aid to Ukraine, totaling more than $44 billion since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
