Azerbaijan has said the talks should take place on a bilateral basis, without the need for Western mediation
Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry today invited Armenia to take part in peace talks which it said could be held on the border of the two countries or elsewhere.
In a statement, the ministry called on Armenia to “avoids unnecessary delays” and to resume negotiations.
“The responsibility for continuing the peace process, including choosing a mutually acceptable place, or deciding to meet at the state border, belongs to both sides,” the ministry said.
Earlier, Azeri president’s foreign policy advisor Ilham Aliyev told Reuters that talks should take place on a bilateral basis, without the need for Western mediation. In the past, the European Union and the United States have tried, without success, to persuade the two sides to reach a peace agreement.
After three decades of conflict since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan is in a strong position to secure a win-win settlement after Baku recaptured the Karabakh region in September, where Armenians enjoyed de facto independence after secession in early 1990s.
