THE North Korea launched a missile believed to be carrying a satellite today, South Korea and Japan said, marking Pyongyang’s third attempt to launch a spy satellite on track this year.

The Japanese government has issued an emergency warning to residents in the southern part of the country to guard against a possible North Korean missile threat.

Japan reported via its J-Alert broadcasting warning system that North Korea appeared to have fired a missile, sending the warning to residents of the southern prefecture of Okinawa.

South Korea’s military said the missile was believed to be carrying a spy satellite and was fired in a southerly direction.

North Korea had informed Japan that it planned to launch a missile between Wednesday and December 1.

Japan’s coast guard announced today that North Korea issued a note about the launch aimed at the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. South Korea’s maritime security agency issued a warning to vessels about the planned launch for the same areas as it did for previous launches.

North Korea attempted to launch spy satellites twice earlier this year but the efforts failed, and South Korean officials had said in recent days that it appeared a third attempt was imminent.
