Five people, including three small children, are in hospital following a knife attack in Dublin city center today, he announced the Irish police.

Local media reported that people were attacked with a knife in the capital’s Parnell Square. Police have cordoned off the area.

One girl was seriously injured in the attack and the other two children are being treated for less serious injuries, police said. An adult woman is also being treated for serious injuries, and an adult man suffered less serious injuries, police added.

The Irish Times reported that the main suspect in the attack has been arrested and is suffering from what are believed to be self-inflicted wounds. The newspaper said that initial indications suggested that the man tried to attack young people and that bystanders intervened.

Police said they are investigating and are not looking for another person at this time.

The motive for the attack, which took place near a school, has not been clarified, the Irish Times added.

According to public television network RTE, the police do not consider the incident to be of a terrorist nature.
