China says it has not identified any new or unusual pathogens linked to a rise in lung disease cases in its north, the World Health Organization said on Thursday, after requesting detailed information from Beijing.

“The Chinese authorities stated that no new or unusual pathogens have been detected, nor any unusual clinical signs, including in Beijing and Liaoning, but only a general increase in the number of respiratory disease cases due to known pathogens,” WHO said in a press release. .

Since mid-October, the WHO has been studying data from Chinese surveillance systems that show a significant increase in respiratory illnesses among children in northern China.

It said it had made a formal request to Beijing for more data, but the Chinese government made no official comment today.

The WHO announced that a video conference was organized today with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Beijing Children’s Hospital, with the assistance of the National Health Commission.

The World Health Organization recommends that the Chinese people observe “measures aimed at reducing the risk of respiratory disease”.

It is already recommended during the Covid-19 pandemic and more generally during epidemics, vaccination, removal from patients, isolation in case of symptoms, testing and treatment if necessary, as well as wearing a mask.

Speaking to reporters on November 13, Chinese authorities attributed this rise in respiratory illnesses to the abandonment this year of health restrictions against Covid and the circulation of known pathogens.
