Call for support for legislation and integrated policies that strengthen the protection of women’s rights in all areas, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addresses in his message for today’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Violence against women is a terrible violation of human rights, a public health crisis and a major obstacle to sustainable development. It is persistent, widespread and worsening. From sexual harassment and abuse to femicide, violence takes many forms. But all are rooted in structural injustice, entrenched by millennia of patriarchyhe notes at the beginning of his message.

At the same time, he observes that today “we still live in a male-dominated culture that leaves women vulnerable by denying them equal dignity and rights” and adds: “We all pay the price: our societies are less peaceful, our economies less prosperous, our world less just.”

In this situation, he argues that a different world is possible and emphasizes: “This year’s UNiTE campaign theme – “Invest in preventing violence against women and girls” – calls us all to take action. To support legislation and comprehensive policies that strengthen the protection of women’s rights in all areas. Increase investment in prevention and support for women’s rights organizations. Listen to survivors and end impunity for perpetrators everywhere. To stand with women activists and promote women’s leadership at every stage of decision-making».

Concluding his message, the UN Secretary-General exhorts: “Let’s build a world that refuses to tolerate violence against women anywhere, in any form, once and for all».
