The situation in Ottawa is out of control, according to the mayor of the Canadian capital, whose center has been closed for more than a week by opponents of health restrictions in Canada.
Protests centered in Ottawa have spread to other major Canadian cities this weekend, with dozens of trucks and protesters paralyzing the center of the Canadian capital.
“Right now the situation is completely out of control because the law is being made by the protesters,” Mayor Jim Watson told a local radio station, noting that the protesters were “far more than the police.”
“We are losing the battle … we must take our city again,” the mayor said, calling “unacceptable” the behavior of the protesters who are closing the streets and activating the gangs without interruption.
The movement, dubbed the “Freedom Convoy,” originally aimed to protest the measure that required all truck drivers to be vaccinated to cross the border between the United States and Canada, but soon turned into a health movement with , for some, against the Trinto government.
Protesters say they will continue to occupy downtown Ottawa until the restrictions are lifted.
Similar protests, but on a smaller scale, took place yesterday in Toronto, Quebec and Winnipeg and continued today, mainly in Quebec.
