The workers talk to the media about this terrifying experience they lived and how they spent their day inside the tunnel
At the hospital 41 workers are recovering who were freed yesterday Tuesday from a tunnel in the state of Uttarakhand in India after 17 days.
Workers were trapped inside the tunnel on November 12 after part of it collapsed due to a landslide. After superhuman efforts, the rescue crews succeeded and freed them.
Today all 41 are safe and are speaking to the media about their terrifying experience and how they spent their day in the tunnel.
One of the workers shared with Asian News International a video he took of his colleagues at the Chinyalisaur Community Health Centre, where they were taken for medical check-ups.
The video captures the workers sitting on their beds checking their mobile phones, eating, drinking tea and taking selfies. Some are seen brushing their teeth.
Satya Dev, who was among the trapped men, told the Times of India newspaper that it was “claustophobic” inside the tunnel and was greatly relieved to be out.
Another worker, Chamra Oraon, told the Indian Express newspaper that there were times when he felt restless inside the tunnel and wondered when he would be let out.
“But I never lost hope,” he said, adding that he spent time playing games on his mobile phone, which he would charge using portable chargers given to them by rescuers through a tube.
“We couldn’t call anyone since there was no network, so we talked to each other and got to know each other,” he told the paper.
Another worker, who spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone, said workers were encouraging each other to stay positive and would all eat their meals together.
“We went for walks and did yoga in the tunnel to stay active,” she said.
Another worker described how at first they would open their phones just to check the battery life time. But once they received chargers, they could use their phones more freely to have fun.
