A fifty-five-year-old Italian fugitive, allegedly linked to the Calabrian mafia, the Drangheta, wanted for trafficking large quantities of cocaine from South America to Europe, was arrested in Colombia, Interpol announced Thursday.
A red notice — an international arrest warrant — had been issued against Massimo Gigliotti by the international police service at the request of Italy, its member state, the institution based in Lyon (southern France) explained in a statement.
The suspect was arrested by Colombian police after “members of the Bologna Carabinieri’s (a.k.a. the Italian gendarmerie) operational investigation department analyzed and distributed information” from the European police agency Europol, according to the same source, who did not specify the date either , nor the exact location of the arrest.
The arrest of the suspect was the result of international cooperation under the Interpol program dubbed I-CAN (“Interpol cooperation against Drangheta”) in Lyon, with the support of an Italian police officer in Colombia.
“The search for the suspect accelerated in South America after the I-CAN program alerted authorities in Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Panama and Venezuela about the fugitive in September,” the Interpol press release added.
Since it was created in 2020, I-CAN has facilitated the apprehension of 93 fugitives internationally, according to Interpol, an international organization with 195 member states and 800 employees in Lyon, which turns a century old this year.
