A An Israeli soldier fatally shot an Israeli citizen whom he mistakenly thought was one of the perpetrators of yesterday’s Hamas attack at a Jerusalem bus stop, Israeli police announced today.

The two attackers, Palestinians from East Jerusalem, killed three people yesterday morning, before two off-duty soldiers and a civilian were shot dead themselves. The last one was the Israeli Yuval Doron Castleman, who succumbed to his injuries last night.

Israeli media reported that Castleman would have celebrated his 38th birthday today.

As the police announced: “Findings of the investigation so far show that during the attack, one of the IDF (Israeli army) soldiers mistakenly believed that the late Yuval (Doron Castleman) – who acted bravely and courageously to neutralize the terrorists – there was a third terrorist, yet another perpetrator of the attack.

“This soldier also fired at him, which led to his serious injury and tragic death,” the Israeli police said in a statement.

Security camera footage obtained by Reuters shows a white car pulling up next to a bus stop full of people. Two men get out of the vehicle, brandish their weapons and attack the crowd as people run in panic. A little later the Palestinian attackers themselves come under fire.

Video on social media shows Castleman firing his gun at one of the attackers, then throwing away his weapon, falling to his knees and throwing his hands up in the air, apparently signaling for the soldiers not to shoot him.
