THE Robert Rich met Winona Ryder after the release of the movie “Girl, Interrupted” in 1999, when she was shopping at the Marc Jacobs store at the Mercer Hotel in New York.
Rich, according to the Varietywho was in charge of communications for the designer at the time, nervously approached the actress.
“I said: I liked it “Girl Interrupted‘ and she said, ‘It’s a girl’s movie,’” Rich recalls.
“I said, ‘I’m a girl movie guy,'” she adds.
They became fast friends. Today, two decades later, Robert Rich is the author of the book Winona, which includes more than 100 photographs of her Winona Ryderas well as a foreword by Marc Jacobs.
The images document their friendship, starting in the basement of the Marc Jacobs store, in hotels in New York and Los Angeles, and in their homes.
Most photos are by Robert Rich. These are not spectacular shots, but Polaroid photos and images captured during the time they spent together. “We went to the movies together, we slept over at each other’s houses,” Rich tells wmagazine.
“I lived in Los Angeles for a long time and she lived in New York, so when I was there I would see her and vice versa. And it was so funny, because every time I saw her, she was doing a different movie and I could never immediately recognize her. She was always completely different, with blonde hair, long hair, short hair. It took me five seconds to realize – oh my god, it’s Winona,” she says.
Many photos are from the store Marc Jacobs with other superstars such as Grace Jonesthe Kate Moss. There are photos from their most glamorous nights out, like when Rich and Ryder attended the 2009 Met Gala together.
“Mark was hosting with Kate Moss, Selma Blair was there, Madonna, because she had just done the LV ads,” Rich recalls. “And Mark’s table was full of Brazilians,” he notes.
For the book “Winona” published by IDEA, Robert Rich collaborated with Francesca Soretti.
