Flights are resuming from this morning at Munich airport after being suspended on Saturday due to heavy snow that caused chaos in Bavaria, where the rail network is expected to remain out of service at least until Monday.
“Flights resumed at 6:00 a.m. local time” although “air traffic disruptions are expected,” Munich airport, Germany’s second largest after Frankfurt, wrote on its website.
“We therefore recommend that travelers flying today contact their airline well in advance of their flight status before going to the airport,” he added.
Air traffic was disrupted on Saturday due to heavy snowfall overnight from Friday to Saturday, which paralyzed transport in southern Germany, particularly in the Bavarian region and its capital, Munich.
The city’s main railway station was closed all day and traffic on the central line was completely disrupted, as was public transport. Across the region, residents who wanted to commute faced train cancellations or delays.
Rail traffic is also expected to slowly resume today as the snowfall has stopped in Munich, Deutsche Bahn said.
However, we will need to expect “massive disruptions until at least Monday” due to the “extensive damage caused by the bad weather” across the region, while some services, notably those to and from Austria and Switzerland, are not expected to resume today.
Bus service resumed this morning, and some tram and subway lines are expected to follow suit, Munich’s public transport company (MVG) announced.
