The United States and Germany are “acting together” against Russia’s “aggression” in Europe, the US President said today. Joe Biden, welcoming the German Chancellor to the White House for the first time Olaf Solts.
“We are working together to continue to deter Russian attacks in Europe” and to “meet China’s challenges,” Biden added.
Germany is “one of America’s closest allies,” Biden said, referring to Chancellor Soltz, whom some Washington officials consider “too lenient” with Russia.
Soltz has caused a stir in recent weeks by refusing to send weapons to Ukraine. At the same time, he had left the issue of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline pending, until he agreed to include it in the list of possible sanctions that could be imposed on Russia in the event of an invasion of Ukraine.
Soltz: Germany and the United States are very close allies
“Very closely linked” allies are Germany and the United States, White House Chancellor Olaf Solz said ahead of a meeting with President Joe Biden. Among the issues on the agenda of the talks, Mr. Soltz highlighted the Ukrainian crisis.
“I appreciate that we have the opportunity to discuss all the issues that you have raised, they are all very important,” said Solz, referring to President Biden’s initial stance on “Russian aggression in Europe”, relations with China, The Western Balkans, the pandemic, climate change and the G7, which Germany has been chairing since 1 January.
“We are very close allies, we are cooperating intensively and this is necessary for the steps we have ahead of us, such as dealing with Russian aggression against Ukraine,” he added. “So it is an important meeting in a very important time”.
After the initial face-to-face meeting of the two leaders at the Oval Office, the extended talks between the two delegations will take place and will be followed by a joint press conference of the two leaders, at 15:15 (local time).
