THE French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanen admitted today that there was “apparent failure” in the “psychiatric” follow-up of the perpetrator of the fatal attack with a knife nearby at the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Saturday night.

“There was clearly a deficiency in his psychiatric monitoring, the doctors thought many times that he was getting better,” the minister told BFMTV channel.

The attacker, Armand Rajabour-Miyadoab, a 26-year-old Franco-Iranian, was already known to French authorities and had a history of mental health problems. He was arrested after the attack that left one dead and two injured.

The Islamic extremist who killed a young German-Filipino tourist and wounded two others had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, according to a video he posted online, before going on the rampage.

Having a file with the authorities for Islamic radicalization, he was sentenced in 2018 to five years in prison for participating in a criminal organization with the purpose of preparing a terrorist act in the business district of La Défense, west of Paris.

The attacker, who shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Most High) at the time of the attack, was listed as a radicalized Islamist and authorities had ordered treatment that included strict psychiatric monitoring.
