Heavy rains in northern Sumatra caused flooding and a landslide that swept away dozens of homes and destroyed a hotel in a village near Lake Toba
Two people they lost their lives and at least ten are missing after the landslide caused by the Torrential rains on the Indonesian island of Sumatrarescuers announced today.
Heavy rains in northern Sumatra caused flooding and a landslide that washed away dozens of homes and destroyed a hotel in a village near Lake Toba.
A 78-year-old woman died on Friday night and a body was found today in search operations for missing persons, rescue chief Budyono, who like many Indonesians goes by name only, said in a statement.
Among the ten people whose fate was still unknown today are children aged 6 and 8.
Rescue crews are searching the lake with several boats and divers looking for the missing, while searches are also underway on land around Tomba, he said.
They are using sonar, fearing that bodies may have drifted into the waters of Tomba, which is the world’s largest volcanic lake, the official said.
About 140 people were evacuated from the village, according to the national search and rescue service.
Indonesia is prone to landslides in the rainy season, and the problem has been exacerbated by deforestation and prolonged torrential rains that cause flooding in some parts of the archipelago.
In March, a landslide on an isolated island in the country, triggered by heavy rains, killed dozens of people and buried houses and ruins in the mud.
