Two French nationals and a German national were among eight people killed when a bus collided with a truck in southeastern Mexico, local authorities said Monday.
The accident happened on Sunday, on a highway connecting Merida, in the state of Yucatan (east), with the seaside resort of Cancun, one of the main destinations of foreign visitors.
The prosecutor’s office clarified in a statement that five of the people who lost their lives were Mexican citizens, two French nationals and one German.
Another 19 people are being treated at a hospital in Cancun, ten of whom are in critical condition. The bus was carrying 45 people, among them several foreign tourists who would spend their holidays in destinations in the Caribbean, especially in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
The cause of the fatal crash, which occurred on a freeway without many turns, at a point where visibility is generally good, remains unknown. The bus overturned after colliding with the truck, according to reports in the Mexican media.
The two drivers, who were injured when the accident took place, are facing investigation.
